The Missoula Art Museum celebrates and acknowledges our forward-thinking philanthropists who have included the museum in their future estate plans. Individuals of all ages have provided transformative gifts to MAM in meaningful ways that make a difference in their lifetime and in the future.

MAM offers various avenues to contribute to the museum’s legacy through the following. These options allow donors to make a lasting impact, whether through flexible funding that can be directed where it's most needed or through targeted contributions that support specific initiatives.

  • Item descriptiThe simplest and one of the most impactful ways to support MAM is to make a planned gift through a bequest in your will. You may arrange for the Museum to receive:

    • a specific dollar amount

    • specified assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible personal property

    • all or a percentage of the remainder of your estate after all other obligations (a residuary bequest)

    • a contingent bequest, making MAM the beneficiary only if the named beneficiary is unable to accept the bequest. Please review our guide for sample museum bequest language:on

  • MAM supporters over the age of 70½ or older, can make a gift directly from your Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) to MAM, which is a smart way to support the museum while potentially reducing your taxable income.

    This type of gift is called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), often referred to as an IRA charitable rollover.

    Benefits of an IRA Rollover Gift

    • Avoid income tax on the amount donated

    • Satisfy all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) if you’re 73 or older

    • Make an immediate impact on our programs and mission

    • No itemized deduction needed—you benefit even if you don’t itemize

    Key Facts

    • You must be 70½ or older at the time of the gift

    • For a donation to qualify as a QCD, you cannot receive benefits above de minimis value in exchange for your support. This means that IRA rollovers generally don’t work for purchases such as Spring Gala tickets, special dinners, etc.

    • The maximum annual amount is $108,000 per individual ($216,000 for couples with separate IRAs)

    • The gift must be made directly from your IRA custodian to MAM

    • Gifts can be made from Traditional, Rollover, and Inherited IRAs, as well as inactive SEP IRAs or inactive SIMPLE IRAs. (Distributions can sometimes be made from Roth IRAs , but this option generally does not have the same tax benefits; consult your tax advisor to discuss your situation)

  • MAM welcomes inquires about possible art gifts to our collection, either given as a gift today or as a planned bequest for the future. Please reach out to Missoula Art Museum with the following information:

    • An image (or images) of the work(s)

    • Object information (artist, title, dimensions, and media)

    • Provenance history (history of ownership)
