MAM members are invited to the museum for a pre-lecture meet and greet with Dr. Leanne Gilbertson, director of the Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University Billings, and curator of Gordon McConnell: When the West Was Won. Enjoy good company, light refreshments, and your first drink for free from the no-host bar.
In this suite of works McConnell explores--with characteristic keen wit, sustained research, and painterly sincerity--real depictions of the West and imagined scenes from classics of the Western film genre, exploring how the construction of a mythic West intersects with the history of art, photography and film-making,
The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to review the breadth and depth of McConnell’s interrogations and to consider our collective fantasies and individualized experiences of the American West.
