Open Studio Nights
Open Studio Nights are MAM's latest educational offering,
and our first ongoing program for teens. On the fourth Thursday of each
month, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, we open up our galleries and classroom facilities
to young people ages 13-18. We invite dynamic, experienced young artists
to provide live demos on new, exciting methods and materials: everything from
stencilling to textile arts to photo transfers. Participants are also
invited to take advantage of MAM's extensive material and tool collection as
they create their own artwork, either independently or with friends. Discussions of our current exhibitions are
led by our fantastic volunteer Teen Art Guides.
Open Studio Nights are not art classes: they are a place to experiment
and explore your own creativity and ideas. They are a place to bounce your thoughts about art off of other
young people. They are a place to
develop your own aesthetic, outside of classroom instruction. And best of all, Open Studio Nights are FREE!
Check back regularly here for downloads of tutorials from previous Open Studio Nights.
Pre-registration is not required, but is appreciated. Please call 406.728.0447 or email to register.
Open Studio Nights Schedule (Past and Upcoming)

Our first ever Open Studio Night was a great success! Young people of all ages gathered to learn the basics of art stencilling from local artist Lauren Norby. Wish you could have made it? You can download Lauren's excellent tutorial here and get some more ideas here.

Leah Morrow, skilled seamstress and owner of Selvedge Studio, will demonstrate basic sewing techniques on our brand new Bernina sewing machines. Participants will explore craft's role in contemporary art as they experiment with machine and hand sewing, iron-on transfer, and embellishment. By the end of the night, you'll have a tote bag (or other creation) to take home with you!
Here are Leah's tutorials for a shoulder bag and a wrist cuff or headband. Here is a list of other resources and ideas about craft as contemporary art.
April 24, 2008
Join artist Courtney Blazon as we explore the many ways you can turn your drawings and other 2-D work into buttons, patches, stickers, books, and much much more! Courtney's energy and talent as a painter, illustrator, publisher and teacher are sure to inspire participants who are interested in making their artwork more visible or expanding their lexicon of materials.
May 22, 2008
DIY CANVASES: Looking to go beyond the boundaries of store-bought, pre-stretched canvases? Local artist Kayla Romberger will be here to demonstrate various techniques of canvas stretching and priming. Reduce your costs, make better and higher quality canvases, and expand your painting horizons as Kayla shares her expertise in both traditional and alternative canvas-building. This workshop is a must for all aspiring painters and drawers.
