Hutterite colonies are a photographic Eden. Their colorful anachronistic clothing, the muted earthly tones of the prairie, and the immense skies become visually rich metaphors for the contrast of their centuries-old communal lives of faith with the increasingly vast, inescapable, individuating technological forces of the 21st Century forces that are tugging us all, ready or not, into the future.

Elizabeth Dove: Corpus of the Unknowable
This intimate exhibition of nine works from the Corpus of the Unknowable series was created in 2004 by Elizabeth Dove, Associate Professor of Art at the University of Montana. Dove incorporates text into her graphic works as a way of exploring memory and knowledge. She states, "I have been cutting up a dictionary for several years now, letter by letter, and saving the definitions to use in artwork. Corpus of the Unknowable displays about a hundred of these cut-up definitions; each print holding text dust behind a skin-like surface. Selecting dictionary definitions and then cutting them up talks about a perpetual search for meaning, the patient digestion of enormous qualities of information in an effort to understand, the impossibility of stabilizing knowledge."

War stories have been around since the day Odysseus came home from the Trojan War. But how much in those stories is true and how much is exaggeration? In his short story about the Vietnam War, "How to Tell a True War Story," Tim O'Brien wrote: "In any war story, but especially a true one, it's difficult to separate what happened from what seemed to happen. What seems to happen becomes its own happening and has to be told that way."

Class will look at examples of contemporary artwork pertaining to these themes, including works by MAM artists Pat Zentz and Kate Hunt, as well as general topics and questions surrounding sculpture and installation art practices. Students will consider the use of materials, space, and time in installation and site-specific work. No experience necessary and most materials provided, though students may need to collect everyday objects for use in their art.
Teachers: Lily Gottleib McHale
Price: $125.00
Members: $112.00
