Renée Brown: Profusion
Missoula-based artist Renée Brown is no stranger to the ceramics community, and we are excited to present her first solo MAM exhibition. The exhibition explores the natural world, with Brown reexamining stones and minerals which so fascinated her in her youth. It is no coincidence that the installation feels like a mineral show. A mature ceramic artist, Brown has been attracted to the natural compositions in gems, minerals, and stones, and in exploring the resulting vision.

Two of Missoula Art Museum's most important supporters are Missoula County and the City of Missoula. The County provides MAM with invaluable operational funding and fine arts insurance while the City, as official owners of the building, provides rent-free occupancy and key maintenance and building care. These are just some of the myriad ways that both of our local governments are committed to nurturing the quality of life and economic activity that a lively arts and heritage-centric community offers.

Jeneese Hilton: Raven Reviewing Modern
St. Ignatius artist Jeneese Hilton is a painter's painter. Her lush canvases of expressively applied paint deftly capture light and color, form and content. The themes of her paintings are richly layered, drawing from myth, history, literature and spirituality, the personal and the communal. Imagery from her own Blackfeet tradition recurs, with creatures suggestive of Native American animism and sacredness, such as the horse, turtle, raven, bison, and bear. The fields of thick color and compelling forms invite the viewer to ponder and find meaning in the paintings.

Montana Triennial: 2015
Missoula Art Museum - Details
May 01 - September 04, 2015
Montana Triennial: 2015
The works range from the abstract to the figurative, but all reflect years of artistic preparation honed by schooling, travel, experience, critical theory, knowledge of place, and repeated trips to the studio revisiting themes and craft. Whether black-and-white or color, intimate or world-weary, rendered by manipulating clay or pushing paint, the works in this exhibition relate private tales and shared subject matter. All are rich in distinct personal expression, yet similar thematic concerns can be discerned. Some of the artists have a special affinity for the land. Others empathize with persons known and unknown, portraying the human condition in all its variety. Technical matters are of utmost importance to some, while other artists are storytellers. Humor can be a main objective. Some scrutinize intimate relationships.
