The Story of Encaustic: History and Process Times: 7 pm
One of the artists participating in our exhibit, Encaustic Invitational, Leslie Van Stavern Millar will present a brief overview of the history of
encaustic.
The longevity, strength and versatility of this medium of melted wax
and pigment has attracted artists from the time of the Ancient Greeks to the
present day. Millar, a Missoula
artist, has been working with encaustic herself for many years and is featured
in the Encaustic Invitational
exhibition. She became fascinated with the medium in 1980 when she viewed
the 2000 year old, still hauntingly life-like, Fayum paintings (Egyptian
funerary portraits) at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio.
