Bicycle Eclectic
The Missoula-based Adventure Cycling Association was established in 1973 to cater to the growing number of American touring cyclists. Today, the nonprofit organization produces long-distance touring maps, publishes a magazine and runs group tours for over 40,000 members worldwide. Many of the members make a point of including the Adventure Cycling offices in downtown Missoula in their cross-country tour itineraries.
Adventure Cycling art director Greg Siple became fascinated with this wonderful parade of visitors, and in the summer of 1982 he began making black and white portraits of riders with their bikes. Nearly 3,000 portraits later and with support from the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association and Missoula Art Museum, Greg has put some of these riders and bikes back on the road for a grand, two-year tour of Montana. Old and young, men and women, strait-laced and bizarre, tragic and triumphant: the images are a striking cross-section of who we are.
